Can Stress Cause Hives - Symptoms of Hives

Hives Photos

What are hives? Nearly 20% of us get hives at some point in our lives. I still hear stories Mom tells about the time I broke out in hives as a baby. They were huge welts and it really scared her!

Hives appear as red, swollen itchy bumps or welts on the skin. They can appear and disappear rather quickly, and in most cases, it is difficult to know exactly what causes hives.

Hives can cause stinging and burning sensations, and occasionally can look like bruises on the skin. Once in a while hives may have a white spot in the middle of the red area.

Hives Causes

Our bodies are miraculous organisms that respond to emotional, physical, chemical and energetic influences. Why can stress cause hives? The answer has to do with the hormones and chemicals that our bodies produce in response to stress.

Under stress, our bodies produce more adrenaline and cortisol. These are useful in short term situations, but when stress is chronic, the excess chemicals create hormonal imbalances which can have multiple effects in the body, including skin inflammation.

Other causes of hives include an immune system response to allergy producing substances. In most cases, doctors do not know what causes hives, but we do know some of the many kinds of stressful events that our bodies can experience which may cause hives symptoms. Some of these include:

  • Viral infections

  • Chronic infections

  • Autoimmune or metabolic diseases

  • Hormonal changes such as menopause

In addition there are a number of environmental or chemical stressors which can cause hives, such as:

  • Sun exposure

  • Excessive hot or cold temperatures

  • Insect bites

  • Drugs including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and diuretics

  • Allergic reactions to foods, drugs, herbs or plants

  • Allergic reactions to inhaled dust, pollen, mold or animal dander

  • Chemical in clothing, skin care products, cosmetics, household cleaning supplies or laundry detergents

Can Stress Cause Hives - Simple Hives Treatments

Why can stress cause hives? It is because our bodies don't have another way to deal with that stress. Your body is giving you a message, and if you listen to that message, you may be able to find a solution.

One of the most obvious solutions is to find some ways to manage your stress. Scheduling some regular time for meditation, or a brisk walk outdoors, a soothing cup of chamomile herbal tea, or fun recreational activities that help you relax, will go a long way to helping you deal with the stress you are feeling. Sometimes just being able to talk to someone about what you are going through can help to reduce the pressure. Make stress management a priority and your body will thank you!

Another simple hives treatment is to keep a daily journal of the foods you are eating, the medicines you take and the things you are doing. Mark down in your journal each time you have an outbreak of hives. This will help you to discover what causes your hives, and in some cases this will be enough to completely eliminate your symptoms!
