Colon Cleanse Side Effects

Tips for Minimizing Skin Rashes When You do a Cleanse

Want to cleanse, but nervous about the possible colon cleanse side effects that can occur?

If you’re looking to detox your system, you probably have all of the wonderful health benefits of colon cleansing.

A cleanse is a great way to recharge your health and gain more energy, but why don't more people do it?

Well, the fact is that there are side effects can and do happen – especially during the transition period at the beginning.

These cleansing reactions and detoxification symptoms happen for some people as a result of the natural self healing process. The challenge is knowing what is a detox symptom and what is not.

For this reason I always recommend that you consult with your doctor or health practitioner before undertaking a cleanse, especially for the first time!

That way you will have some support to go through the process.

Why Do a Cleanse?

We live in a polluted world filled with toxins. They’re present in our food, our water and even the air. The sad truth about these toxins is that they don’t stay on the outside – they do enter our bodies in a number a ways.

Over the years, toxins build up in our systems and can cause all kinds of health problems. Some effects are gradual, while others can come on suddenly. Some people choose to remedy this effect by cleansing their systems with colon cleanse or detox plans.

Don’t let the side effects discourage you, however. There are a few ways that you can ease that transition period so that the effects aren’t as noticeable.

Benefits of Cleansing

Colon cleansing is a great way to restore health and vitality on a short-term basis. While cleansing is no substitute for an overall healthy lifestyle in general, the process does provide a boost and in a way, “cleans the slate,” allowing you to start fresh on a journey toward wellness.

There are quite a few worthwhile benefits of doing a colon cleanse, including:

  • Increased energy
  • Improved skin appearance and texture
  • Weight loss
  • Improved digestion
  • Mental clarity
  • Greater immunity to viral and bacterial illness

For some, these benefits end up being short-term, at best. By pairing a colon cleanse with a plan for healthy lifestyle changes that promote long-term gut health, however, they can be life-long!

Common Colon Cleanse Side Effects

The more challenging effects that come along with a cleanse are related to the process that your body goes through to eliminate toxins.

Keep in mind, though, that they are only temporary as your body transitions to “detox mode.” Negative transitional side effects sometimes include:

  • Fatigue
  • Acne and other skin issues
  • Headaches
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Old emotional issues that you thought were gone, coming to the surface

Fortunately, awareness of these issues puts you in control of your situation. You’ll know that the cleanse really is working and that your body is working to expel the accumulated toxins in your system. While it seems counter-intuitive, these signs can mean that you are actually on your way to increased health and well-being!

Why Do Cleansing Detox Symptoms Occur?

It’s good to be aware of some of the side effects that occur with a colon cleanse before you begin, so that you know what to expect. Colon cleanse side effects can influence your body as well as your emotional state and your mental clarity.

Simply put, this occurs because your body 's organs of elimination are working overtime during a cleanse. Some toxins are circulating through your system as they are on their way out.

Examining the side effects isn’t just a simple matter of “weighing the pros and cons,” however. Some of the symptoms that do arise are actually a manifestation of healthy changes occurring.

As toxins are released, your body just needs to keep up with processing them. Since, like most people, you’ve likely accumulated a huge amount of toxins in your colon over the years, it’s no wonder that dispelling these more quickly may present a challenge to your body.

Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the detoxification symptoms that may come, especially during the beginning “transitional period” of the cleanse.

Once again, we do recommend that you undertake colon cleansing in partnership with your health care professional.

Minimizing Colon Cleanse Side Effects

When it comes to the side effects of doing a colon cleanse, results will vary among different people according to their unique physiology, and also what their lifestyle has looked like up to that point.

Someone with an unhealthier lifestyle – lots of junk food, alcohol use, and smoking, for example – is going to experience more of an impact as their body releases all of those built up toxic residues.

Doing a colon cleanse is not always necessarily so drastic, however. Those that live a moderately healthy lifestyle between cleanses will notice that the effects are less dramatic as detoxification becomes less of a trauma to the system.

Even if you are about to begin your first colon cleanse session after years of toxin buildup, however, there are a few steps you can take to ease the transitional period and minimize the negative side effects.

  • Start slow by cleaning up your diet a few days or a week before your first cleanse
  • If you are taking herbal colon cleanse products such as ColoFlush, start with a lower dosage to see how your body responds.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Allow ample time for rest and sleep

Since some of the detox symptoms are emotional and mental, it’s best to choose a time when you will be able to take some of your more serious responsibilities lightly and also have plenty of emotional support available.

A weekend at home alone with loved one, for example, would be an ideal time if they are able to help you deal with some of the unpleasant feelings you might face.

Tips for Using Colon Cleansing Products

When you have sensitive skin, it is helpful to go slowly with any new health regime. Some people cleanse primarily with fruits and vegetables (see our Homemade Cleansing page) and some use an herbal cleansing program.

I've found that even the best herbal cleansing products do not work well for everyone. Some sensitive people cannot tolerate colon cleansing herbs. If you are one of those folks, you may have a better result with other cleansing avenues such as Detox Drops which works by supporting your digestion and other elimination systems.

While colon cleanse side effects can definitely be unpleasant, the benefits of detoxing are worth a bit of time and consideration in order to minimize them.

Don’t let the risk of experiencing side effects deter you from cleansing your system. Take it slow and ease into the routine so you can reap the benefits without having to face the trials of the transition period.
