How do Pur Minerals Work for Sensitive Skin?

Pur Minerals foundation is a type of mineral makeup unlike others on the market. With unique and convenient packaging, the product offers "4-in-1" benefits, effectively working as a foundation, concealer, powder and sunscreen with SPF 15.

The line boasts other products as well: they carry a tinted mineral moisturizer as well as eye and lip products.

About The Company

Pur Minerals market their products as "nature-based" and cruelty free. Here's what they have to say about their products:

The company professes to have formulated a line of cosmetics and skin care products that not only improve skin appearance, but also the health and natural quality of the skin.

One of their most popular products is their pressed mineral foundations, which offer coverage while also nourishing and conditioning the skin. They also boast a number of multitasking skin care products which cut down on the amount of products needed in customers' overall beauty regimen.

The company supports the Go Red for Women organization based in Atlanta, Georgia, which works to fight heart disease among women by funding research and promoting public education on heart health. They also support Dress For Success, another charitable organization dedicated to women by helping low-income or unemployed women seek gainful employment.

Pur Minerals also strives to use eco-friendly practices in order to minimize their global footprint. They don't use animal testing and aim for sustainable packaging.

What Pur Minerals Customers Are Saying

Judging by online reviews of their various products, overall, most customers tend to be quite satisfied with their experiences. One common rave is that the pressed mineral foundation offers superior coverage compared to other leading brands of mineral foundation.

As one customer raves, the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation provides great coverage for even the peskiest skin issues, like dark under eye circles.

Other features customers are frequently pleased with include the convenient use, price point and color options. Not all customers are satisfied, however: the company recently changed their formula, and approval definitely is not unanimous.

Some customers do note a significant change in the quality of some of the products since undergoing a recent formula change, stating that the coverage is not as effective and the finished look is lacking the quality they've come to know.

There are also reports that the makeup application does not last as long and now needs to be reapplied throughout the day for continuous wear. Some once-happy customers are even completely switching to other products after using the line for years.

Though some users do find that this line isn't a good fit for them, the overall rating is pretty good.

Sensitive Skin Concerns

Many people with sensitive skin turn to mineral makeup in order to avoid some of the commonly used harsh chemicals that can trigger issues. Pur Minerals may or may not be a good choice for those with sensitive skin.

While overall, their products do contain mostly gentle ingredients, some might be worth a close look. Their 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Foundation with SPF 15, for example, Bismuth Oxychloride, an ingredient that may trigger irritation for those with sensitive skin. See our best mineral makeup for sensitive skin page for more on the effects of Bismuth Oxychloride.

Zinc Stearate may also cause unwanted reactions for some people.

There are a few other questionable ingredients used throughout the line that those with sensitive skin should be wary of. Artificial fragrances, for example can irritate sensitive skin – as can artificial colorings, which are even linked to behavioral disorders.

Cosmetic Ingredients We Recommend That You Avoid

Parabens are another red flag for those with or without sensitive skin, due to their irritating nature and link to cancers and hormone disruption. Some of the products also contain petroleum products such as mineral oil, which are simply cheap fillers that don't do the skin, especially sensitive skin, any favors.

Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES) are also best avoided. These chemicals are surfactants that add foaming qualities to products like cleansers and shampoos. Unfortunately, they can be irritating to sensitive skin and also have the added effect of making other harmful toxins in personal care products more easily absorbed by the skin.

Other ingredients to be on the lookout for are mercury based preservatives such as mercurous chloride, and preservatives that have the ability to leach formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde-leaching preservatives like BHT, DMDM-Hydantoin, quaternium-15, or Germall are found in a number of personal care products. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

Some of the same products, however, also contain skin calming and soothing ingredients like shea butter, which also offers another boost of sun protection as well.

Our Recommendation for Pur Minerals and
Sensitive Skin

Bottom line? If you have sensitive skin, these products might work well for you – or they might not. It all depends on your unique reaction to some of the more questionable ingredients.

Unfortunately, people can have skin sensitivity for various reasons, so there is no "one size fits all" answer. I personally would not recommend you try them as some of these ingredients pose a risk of skin irritation. You may break out now or in several months, as some people develop a delayed reaction to Bismuth Oxychloride.

If the ingredients in Pur Minerals products do concern you, fortunately there are a lot of options on the market these days when it comes to natural mineral foundations.

Finding Natural Mineral Foundation for Sensitive Skin

It can be difficult to find even natural skincare products that will work for sensitive skin. Even if they don't contain hazardous chemicals, many of them contain a long list of ingredients, any one of them which may provoke an allergic reaction in sensitive skin.

The truth is, even natural botanical ingredients or essential oils can cause skin rashes breakouts for some people with hypersensitive skin! It has happened to me, and may have happened to you as well.

It has taken me a number of years to discover what types of products work best for sensitive skin. I now use hypoallergenic loose minerals which are the only brand I've found that work well for all types of sensitive skin. They don't contain irritants or toxic preservatives, they have a short list of ingredients and no plant allergens.

Alternatives to Pur Minerals - Many Hypoallergenic Cosmetics Don't Work!

Have you ever used a nice, sensitive skin product and found that it didn't make a bit of difference for your skin, hair or appearance? That has been my unfortunate experience more often than not.

Over the years, my sensitivities have created a number of limitations. Most women can go out and color their hair, do up their nails in pretty colors, and use a nice shampoo that will make their hair shiny.

Now I'm not big into my appearance, but I do like to look and feel my best. It has been a real problem to find cosmetics and skincare products that won't cause my skin to break out!

After a multitude of experiences that led to my hair looking like a wet cat, or my face looking as white as a sheet (gotta love that non-toxic sunscreen for sensitive skin) , or my eyes getting irritated and breaking out, so I finally gave up on looking for sensitive skin products.

Then, when I least expected it, I found a small, family owned company that makes a unique line of sensitive skin products that actually works! I am so grateful to have finally have shiny and healthy hair again. Even my husband loves their shampoo!

Cleure is the only company I've found so far that offers products that will not cause your skin to break out, that will not load up your skin or hair with irritating preservatives and chemicals, AND that will actually help you to look and feel great!
