Rosacea and rhynophyma

Figure the best way at this point is to reboot my immune system somehow nothing topical works and I'm not interested in chemicals as I have not had good results with my dermatologist. Even my dermatologist wants to give me products that are not healthy for a person. She suggested I use a popular line of face cleanser and it's suppose to be for sensitive skin and after using it awhile without good results I looked up the ingredients which are all harsh with added three para bens known carcinogens I told her and it didn't faze her she still keeps promoting it which is discouraging ugh! Looking for Healthy skin care

Rosacea

by Paula
(Australia)

I have rosacea on my cheeks, I also get little pimples with white pus occasionally. I'm almost always red which I cover up with mineral makeup. It looks like the little capillaries are spreading. I often get lumpy, flaky and dry cheeks.

I've had the antibiotic cream which I applied ages ago but I prefer natural alternatives. Also i believe i need to be clean from the inside so I've been juicing vegetable for breakfast since the beginning of the year and I think it's helped a little. I juice kale, carrot, apple, cucumber, celery, parsley and grapefruit all together! I love it!!!

I use trilogy products for extra sensitive skin to clean and moisturise my skin. I would prefer a more economic product but can't find one.

How can you help? I wish there was a cure! H E L P!

A red-rash on the top of my foot

by Mark
(Vancouver, WA)

I have a red-rash about the size of a half dollar that has been on the top of my right foot for several months. It was pussing and oozing when I used an athlete's foot spray, but now just remains red, not itchy, but very annoying.

I have used Clotrimazole and Triamcinolone Acetonide creams, obtained through a free clinic where certified doctors and nurses volunteer. Two doctors gave two different diagnoses, but the rash remains.

I have always had sensitive skin, having to use special deodorants and dish washing soap, to avoid eczema break-outs.

Is this enough information? Thank you for your response.

Mark

P.S. The picture attached is not my foot. My rash, though not as scaly or defined, is similar looking.

Acne that nothing helps

by Emily
(Wisconsin)

I've had acne since I was in middle school, I've tried just about every treatment you can buy over the counter, 3 or 4 different prescriptions (not Accutane afraid to take that)and many natural remedies that I found around the internet. Its the worst on my cheeks, I also get cysts and white heads, there are a few black heads mostly on my nose. I've even tried just a really good skincare routine with cleansers not actually meant for acne. I use moisturizer almost every day and then use a redness reducing primer, a liquid foundation and then powder on top of that. Need ideas!

I have had this condition since 2005. The Dermatologists give me steroid creams which do not help. I have given up trying to make this skin condition go away. Eye lids eczema and trying to find a foundation for mature super senstive skin

by Wendy
(Loveland Colorado)

My skins seems to blister very easy...I have been trying to find a foundation that would blister me and still have the amount of coverage I like..My skin is oily with a dry patch by my eye and i have terrible eye lid eczema that would go away. So any advice would be great...Thank you Wendy

Our reply

Thank you Wendy for your message. Ouch, that sounds very painful to get blisters from your foundations. Some of the products I have found most effective and also not irritating are here at Recommended Products page. That's not a guarantee that they will work for you, as everyones skin is different.

There are several choices on that page, and in addition to these I have a list of products I haven't yet tried, but that I have researched their ingredients and I would use! Whenever I look for skincare products and find ones that seem safe and effective, I add them to my Amazon Store.

Do you remember when your eyelid eczema started? Was there any major or minor change in your daily routine at that time? You can reply in the comments box below.

Face Eczema

by Angelina
(USA California )

Hi my name is Angelina ! I am 15 and 2 days ago I started my first day of high school , it's very cool but what is making me not like it is because of my face eczema I've already had people ask me what is wrong with my face and it really just brings my whole self confidence way down !

My eczema is REALLY BAD the worst ever and I have had it since I was a baby. This summer is the first time I got it on my face it started one day web I woke up with swollen red eyes , later that day my eyelids started peeling really bad ... Then weeks went by and my whole forehead eye lids chin upper lip and where my temples are started getting red , dry , flaky and just were non stop peeling , today I'm here writing this because it has got so bad I don't even want to go to school anymore to see anyone , someone asked me what was wrong with my face and I tried to be strong , I lied to them and told them idk what happened because I'm too embarrassed ... My eye brows are going kind of bald and it feels like I have less eyelashes ..I'm dreading on going back to school my mom says she doesn't want me to do home studies till next year by the time I clear it up ... I don't know what to do anymore I feel I have tried everything , school actually makes my skin worse because I'm in a A/C room all day then I come out to the hot and the climate change makes my skin get real dry . And of course they not gonna do anything special for me :( does anyone have any suggestions on how I should deal with this? Plz thank you ... God Bless you all to all you people with skin conditions like me. Stay strong

Our reply

Hi Angelina, I am so sorry you are having an outbreak of eczema on your face. Yes, I understand how difficult it is to have facial eczema and especially when you are in school and everyone is asking you about it! The embarrassment makes it so much worse!

I recommend that you first get medical advice from your doctor or dermatologist, and that you focus on finding out what is causing the eczema on your face. It could be related to allergies, for example to a food, cosmetics, chemicals in fabric or laundry detergent, dust mites, or some other cause. It takes a little bit of detective work to figure out exactly what might be triggering your skin to break out.

You can learn more about how to discover the causes of sensitive skin, and also a section on our site devoted to Eczema Treatment which may give you some ideas of a good place to start. It sometimes takes a while to get to know your skin and exactly what it needs, and I hope these areas of our site can be helpful.

If you have not had success with medical approaches to eczema, you may find that home remedies, diet and lifestyle changes may help to clear up your face eczema. One of the most popular natural treatment programs for eczema we've found is Eczema Free Forever which offers a two month guarantee so you can try it to see if it works for your skin.

I hope you find relief soon and wish you healing and success in finding a solution that works for your sensitive skin.

Dry Skin Eczema

by Paula
(Australia)

Hi there, my problem isn't so much a problem, more of an issue really. I have dry skin and ezcema. I've always had it and most likely always will. I'm use to it as I really don't have much choice. The main issue is finding skin care that will help and not hinder the dryness.
I find that when I do find a moisturiser I'm happy with, no matter what it claims on the bottle/tube, it ends up drying out my skin after several weeks use. I've tried making my own natural moisturiser, however, its so much easier to buy it. (I've decided that maybe making it myself will be best for my skin, and I find its so much more cost effective).
What can you suggest?

Our reply

Hi Paula, thank you for your message. I have a question for you ... please reply using the comments box below.

Is your skin is less dry if you use your own homemade skincare moisturizers?

OR do you find that you have the same problem, where your moisturizer (even homemade) only works for a few weeks, and then starts to dry out your skin?

I have some suggestions for you, but your answer will help me know better what to advise.

Having funny patchy coloration on skin

by Henry
(Lagos, Nigeria)

For years on, i've had this yellowey-color on my skin(particularly my thighs and underneath my wrist).I tried using all sorts of medication including herbal thinking it was eczematious condition with little success. I kind of think its a seasonal skin condition but my mum says my dad also experienced such during his days. I'm very shy of wearing boxer or even shorts to do simple in-house chores for fear of 'criticism' from from friends. Its neither itchy nor irritating but keeps spreading by each day. Pls can you help me out here? I'd really appreciate it. N:B- i cant send u a graphical view of the trouble-spot cos we dont have electricity and the area is quite dark. I promise to upload it later on. Thanks. U're one in a million.

Everything Affects My Rosacea

My biggest skin issue is Rosacea. It is this because everything effects it. From the the food I eat to the amount of sun exposure to the products I use on my face. Before I do just about anything I have to think about what kind of effect it will have on my skin.
I do realize that many people have issues far worse than mine, but I do think there has to be a way to let my guard down (so to speak) with this skin disorder.
Thank you

Our reply

Thank you for your message. I really understand, it is so difficult to have to think about how everything will affect your skin. It is possible to reduce the symptoms of rosacea to the point where they are much more manageable, and some people have found a way to eliminate them completely.

Finding a solution really requires a combination of research, trial and error, and getting to know your own body and what works for you. Also, your own inner guidance and intuition are important as well. I will be developing some new resources that may help you with this, you'll see more information in our members area and newsletter list. Thanks very much for sharing.

Face is always broken out

by Michelle
(Ohio)

No matter what type of makeup and hair care products I use (try to use organic/no chemicals) I always have acne on my face. I do have Lupus as well. I will be 40 and have never had clear skin. Dermatologist only wanted to keep me on pills/antibiotics and lotions that still did not work to clear up my skin. Even with makeup applied, I can still see my blemishes underneath.

Thanks!

Long-term Ezcema after Plastic Surgery

by Karina
(New York)

Hello, you are doing a very good job, I am convinced you are helping many people.
I am a 28 year old woman, I had an areola reduction done some 2,5 years ago (the only plastic surgery I have ever done). The doctor is respected in his field. However things did not turn out well. Needless to say I regret the procedure.

I apparently have very stretchy skin, so now the areola looks pretty much the same as before the surgery, despite now it has a big scar around it. My biggest problem is however, I have atopic dermatitis, and my skin on my areola and nipple got trigged by the trauma: the operation and the healing process under the plasters.

Hence, about 2,3, years I have had eczema on my areola and my nipple, but not on the scar itself. I have had many periods of steroid creams and moisturize daily (nothing helps long-term).
I now apply moisturize daily and Protopic as maintenance treatment twice a week. It really does keep the skin calm, but as soon as I try to come off the Protopic it slowly comes back...I can feel how it starts itching again. So I start using it again. I don't want to continue with this treatment forever. Do you have any ideas for me??

Many thanks

Best Regards

Karina

My reply

Hi Karina, thank you for your message and your warm words! :) I am so sorry to hear of your skin reaction after the surgery. I do understand, from my own personal experience, how surgery can both help but also create traumas of their own which can have a secondary side effect because the area is a little more vulnerable.

I have a few questions for you, that would help me to better make suggestions ...

1. Tell me more about your atopic dermatitis, have you had this for a long time? Is it only in small areas of your body, or do you have large outbreaks?

2. How have you been treating your dermatitis outbreaks, the ones that are not near your surgical scars?

3. Do you notice any changes to the rash related to your monthly cycle? For example does it get worse or better right before or after your period?

4. Have you noticed any kind of change to the rash related to foods you eat?

Please reply in the comments box below, thanks very much!

Super sensitive scalp

by Don
(Des Moines, Ia)

I have never had any reaction to anything chemical. Until about 10 years ago. My scalp breaks out in acne-like eruptions. If I change shampoos the condition seems to improve and may even clear up entirely. After a week or ten days of the new shampoo, the problem appears again. Usually in a new area of scalp. I have scoured the internet and tried every hypo/hyper shampoo out there. I've talked to my Dr. and my pharmacy and followed their recommendations. Seems to me you also had favorite products. If you asked me to, I tried them. I still have the problem. My circumstance or condition is the same, but I don't think it's going to get better.

Our reply

Hi Don, thank you for sharing. I have two questions for you that I hope may be helpful for you. Please reply in the comments section, thank you!

1. Have you ever tried the "no shampoo method" of hair care? You can do an internet search for this, which is also called by it's less delicate name, the "no poo" method. Basically, you stop using all shampoos and hair products on your hair.

Initially, sometimes for months, your hair might look pretty bad, greasy and stringy (results vary quite a bit depending on your unique situation) but according to those who have done this, eventually your hair takes on a nice natural luster and feels great!

I haven't tried this myself as I find greasy hair incredibly uncomfortable, but some people find it very liberating, and it also prevents them from having to deal with exactly this situation of scalp rashes and breaking out from even natural or nontoxic shampoos.

Some people who do this no-shampoo method use a modification where they rinse their hair with baking soda and/or vinegar, so that is another option. I've found both baking soda and vinegar to be mild but also to have a nice effect on the hair. They both make the hair soft and silky, although the vinegar does make you smell temporarily like a salad!

2. Is there any kind of major or even minor life change that you experienced 10 years ago, right before your scalp began to break out? For many of us there are multiple major AND minor life changes happening all the time, so it may be difficult to pinpoint. Sometimes just one exposure to something irritating can begin an ongoing cycle of scalp irritation and rashes.

Skin Care after Radio Therapy for Breast Cancer

by Theresa
(UK)

Hi My query is as per problem line . I m aware that post radiotherapy the skin is liable to be red and inflamed , peeling for a period of about 3 weeks may be some blisters apparent as well . Any ideas on remedy thanks

Our reply

Hi Theresa, thank you for your message. I hope you are beginning to feel better after your radiation treatments.

I am not an expert on radiation treatments, but there are some very safe and helpful tips at the Cancer.org site on Gentle Treatments for Skin After Radiation Therapy. The most important thing is to be very patient and careful with your skin. A lot of the things you may take for granted like going out in the sun, using creams and lotions on your skin, will likely need to be temporarily avoided.

The reason for this is to allow your body to heal, and to prevent creating more stress on your skin. For example don't wear tight fitting clothing in the areas that are inflamed, avoid tanning beds and sun exposure, and consult with your doctor about anything you put on your skin.

For those who are in the middle of radiation treatments, anything you put on your skin actually can affect the amount of radiation that can enter your body during the treatment.

The best way to help your skin to heal is to do everything possible to support your body's physical, emotional and spiritual health. Blessings on your healing journey.

Embarrassing Red Itchy Flaky Face

I have exhausted networks of physicians and websites to find a moisturizing solution for my SUPER sensitive face I know there are worse problems others must deal with but I am always so so itchy and flaky and nothing seems to help! I am so uncomfortable I've had allergic eczema for years I just want a moisturizer I am glad to hear u r feeling better

My reply

Thank you so much for your warm wishes! :) You might find this article helpful on Tips for Managing Dry Sensitive Skin as there are a number of suggestions that don't require the use of products on your face.

Two questions about your situation with finding a moisturizer....

1. Have you found any success by using single ingredient moisturizers like shea butter, jojoba oil, etc? I've even heard some people use ghee on their face! (Please do a skin test before trying any of these)

2. Have you noticed any difference in the flaking, itching and rashes when you add more foods that contain essential fatty acids to your diet? There is more information on this at the World's Healthiest Foods website.

Please reply in the comments section below, it does take me a while to reply but I will! :)

About Using SPF in Makeup

by DiAnn
(Battle Creek MI)

The last time I use anything with an SPF in it my skin had a bad reaction to it so I'm very conscious about using anything with it in it. Is there a make up or moisturizer that you recommend that does not contain this in it? Thank you and I love your site it in so informative and helpful!
DiAnn S

My reply

Thanks so much Diann for your warm words about our site! :)

Yes, there are a number of different brands of makeup and moisturizer products that do not contain added SPF.

The one that is most helpful if you want to avoid the sun is ***z-cleure.shtml*** products, as many of their skincare products contain shea butter which provides a small amount of physical shielding from the sun. This will not replace sunscreen or sun protection, but every little bit helps!

Their
***z-cleure-loose-mineral-powder.shtml*** does contain Titanium Dioxide which is used in some suncreen products, so if you are certain that you are reacting to that ingredient, you will want to avoid this and most mineral makeup products.

Q question about your question :) ...

Are you certain that it was specifically the SPF (sunscreen ingredients) which caused your skin reaction? (You can reply in the comments box below)

The reason I ask is that there are different types of ingredients that are used to block the sun's rays from entering your skin, and some are more irritating than others.

For example, the more nontoxic sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, some of the more irritating ones use PABA or Oxybenzone.

Then there are all the other ingredients that are used in sunscreen products, and any one of these may also be a challenge for sensitive skin!

We do have a page on Sunscreens for Sensitive Skin which you may find helpful as well.

Rosacea Flare Ups

by Rocio
(California)

I went vegan about six months ago and I have seen more flare ups. Not sure why. I have also noticed more tiny red bumps on my neck.

My reply

Thank you Rocio for sharing. Yes, changing your diet can actually increase your skin inflammations for several reasons.

1. If you make many major changes all at once to your diet, your body may react to the change. For example, going from lots of processed and refined whole foods to suddenly eating lots of healthy, whole foods will create a major change in your body. Ultimately, you will be healthier, but if you make sudden and rapid changes you may find your skin reacting.

2. Even healthy changes in your diet can create what is known as a 'detox' or cleansing reaction. This happens when your body receives more nutrients and begins to cleanse itself from accumulated toxins, which can circulate through your body and create symptoms.

3. Depending on many factors like your climate, your daily environment, your heredity, and your blood type, your new diet may be lacking in nutrients that your body needs. Some people for example find that they need to eat some animal products, others feel much better without them. Some people find that raw or vegan diets create health benefits for a short time but they have more difficulty sustaining health for the long term.

Dietary choices are completely individual, and there are no "shoulds" ... only what is healthiest for you. They also change over time!

The only way you would know what diet is best for you is to try out one that you are intuitively drawn too, and then keep a diary to make note of how these affect your overall health and your skin.

Then, when you make changes, make them gradually! That way you can monitor how you feel and what happens for your rosacea and skin rashes.

Flakey, itchy, red spot just under my eye.

by Char
(vancouver, wa)

Now it seems to have spread to the other eye. The Dr. gave me Desonide cream 0.05% to use twice a day. which helps, however as soon as I stop using it, it comes back, and its something to only use 2 weeks at a time. Plus it makes my eyes a little blurry or wet or something.

Remedies for Burns

Hello...I am of East Indian descent and about ten days ago I was burnt while cooking some of the burns are 1st degree and some are 2nd degree. The damage was done to d face and upper chest. Is there anything I can put on in to sipped up the drying of it. Presently i am using an antibiotic cream recommended by my plastic surgeon....I am very worried about discoloration of my skin after the pink skin comes in....some places are turning dark...

My reply

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear about your burns. I don't have much experience with burns, but I've done some research on how to help heal scars, and you'll find most of what I learned on this page on Scar Healing.

I've also learned from personal experience that scar healing is very related to your overall state of health. If your immune system is depleted or compromised, the scars take longer to heal. Anything you can do to eat a healthy diet and minimize toxins and stress will make a positive difference in your skin's healing process.

What can really clean a cream burnt face

by Maya Mary
(Nigeria)

despite trying some facial creams, my burnt face remains unclear, or if cleared, it
turns red at the upper cheek. pls help

Hi Maya,I am so sorry to hear that your face has been burned. When skin is injured, it is even more sensitive and so you may find that your face becomes even more irritated when you apply creams. Many face creams contain chemicals or ingredients that can inflame sensitive skin. You may want to try some home remedies for burns. Some of these may help in soothing your skin without creating more irritation.

The most effective and soothing natural home remedies for burns that I am aware of are aloe vera, which is moisturizing and very soothing for a burn, and honey, which can also help to soothe the pain of a burn. I hope you are able to find something to use on your face that will help your burn to heal.
