Looking for Hypoallergenic Hair Gel

What is your main sensitive skin problem?: Allergies

What would you like to see more of on our site?: Hypoallergenic products
Is there anything else we can do to help?: What is the best hypoallergenic hair gel that doesn't contain those chemicals and ingredients?

Our Reply:

Hi, and thank you very much for your feedback. Yes, finding a good hypoallergenic hair gel is a real challenge nowadays. The brand I usually recommend has temporarily discontinued their hair gel, though they hope to re-introduce it later on in the year.

I have found even the fragrance free product lines that you find in health food stores that claim to be hypoallergenic have parabens and preservatives that I find irritating and would not want on my skin.

So far I've only found a few hypoallergenic hair gels and they each have their benefits and drawbacks. I've listed these here in our hypoallergenic hair gel section.

Has anyone else found a good fragrance free hypoallergenic hair gel that does not contain parabens or irritating preservatives?

Some people I know have tried using homemade hair gel with plain gelatin. I've never tried this myself.

I wish I had more to offer, and I hope our visitors can share their recommendations so you can find something that will work for you!

Hair Styling Products for Allergies

After a year of itching, and eczema, on my body and scalp I have now been diagnosed as having allergies to Balsam of Peru and Nickel. The
first one is my biggest problem as I have been told not to use perfumed products. I am having real problems finding the right hair care
products, in particular hair styling products such as mousse or styling spray. I wondered if you had any suggestions. Many thanks,

Our reply

Hi, thanks for your message. Yes, I understand the difficulty of finding hair products that are free of perfumes! My problem with finding hair care products that are free of perfumes was that most of them looked absolutely terrible on my my hair. I've managed to find a few which seem to work well for me and many of my visitors ...

These are the hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner I have been using since 2008. They work really well to clean the hair and create a nice shine, without perfumes, chemical irritants or plant allergens. You can read my story about this at our hypoallergenic shampoo page.

In terms of finding non-toxic hypoallergenic hair gels, hair sprays, mousse and so forth, these are even harder to find. I just got a letter from another person who is also looking for this. I look periodically and still have not found a lot. Here's what I have found so far.

  1. ***z-cleure.shtml*** used to make a nice hair gel but they discontinued that formulation which contained parabens. Visit their site to see if they have the updated version yet.

  2. Free and Clear Hair Spray

I wrote a detailed article on this here at hypoallergenic hair gel for fine hair, and the number 1 and number 2
suggestions on this page are the ones would work for you as they have no added perfumes. I wouldn't recommend the natural and organic options on
that page, as they have perfumes from essential oils.

I hope these are helpful for you, and I wish you much success in finding hair products without perfumes. Please let me know what you
discover, you can add a comment to this page if you'd like to share!

Hypoallergenic Haircare Products

by Estella
(Turkey)

Firstly I live in Turkey do you ship there? I am moderately allergic to haircare products I don't swell up with immediate use but sniffle when I use standard hairspray and gel. could you please suggest a suitable product for my use. Many thanks. Estella Saville. PS I have Barclaycard or Masta

Hi Estalla, thanks for your message. Yes, most hairsprays and hair gels contain highly irritating and allergy producing ingredients, and it is difficult to find hypoallergenic hair care products that work well.

Shampoo and Conditioner

The best hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner I have found is from Cleure. These products work extraordinarily well on all types of hair, without allergens or fragrances.

To find out whether they ship to Turkey, create an account on their site by clicking the "My Account / Order Status" link at the top right of their site. When you add your address, you will see a drop down menu of countries and if you see Turkey in the list, they can ship there.

Hypoallergenic Hair Gels and Sprays

I have had difficulty finding a good hypoallergenic hair gel and hair spray. The brands I've looked at so far are here: at Hypoallergenic Hair Gel and Hair Spray, however I don't know which of these brands is available in Turkey.

Another option, if you are not able to find hypoallergenic hair care products is to make your own.

For example, some people find a simple hairspray that is made of sea salt and water can help to hold hair without chemicals or irritating ingredients. Gelatin can be used as a hair gel, and epsom salts can be added to a hypoallergenic hair conditioner to create body.

Home made treatment for scalp

by Alison
(Alisonsara@hotmail.com)

Ok I've been having mild to moderate reactions from hair color for my roots for the last couple of years . I went to a salon to let them do the roots and my scalp felt like it was on fire.
I took benadryl and it still itched and
Burned. I started to shampoo with the generic form of selsen blue Dandruff shampoo. Afterward I applied jose Maran Argan oil to my scalp this was the only thing that calmed it down
Hope it helps someone

Allergic Reaction
by: Anonymous

Having an allergic reaction to hair dye, I tried many things. Head and Shoulders with Baking Soda mixture is a painful concoction. Nearly passing out in the shower applying it. Oil of marrakesh seemed to ease the pain. I had a severe swollen face, eyes swelled shut, and severe weeping from my scalp.

Hair Dye Without Balsam Of Peru

by Kim
(Burlington Ontario Canada)

Hi,
I am wondering if you can help me, I am allergic to Balsam Of Peru. Can you please tell me if you have hair dyes without Balsam Of Peru? Thank you.

Our reply

Hi, and thanks for your message. We do not personally manufacture or sell hair dye or skincare products, however we have partnered with several online merchants that I use myself for my own sensitive skincare.

Our My Sensitive Skin Care store has a number of hair dye products, however you will need to check the ingredients list for each product to be sure they do not contain Balsam Of Peru.

Some natural hair dye brands do not list their ingredients and so you may need to contact the company directly. Also, companies change their ingredients lists on a regular basis, so I recommend that you contact the company for their most current and updated ingredient list.

Looking for Natural Hair Color

Please suggest some natural hair color. When i use ordinary colors available in the market i face skin irritation. I'm bearded man and i want to dye my hair. thank you

Our reply

Hi, yes it is difficult to find good quality natural hair coloring. You are wise to find something safer and more natural for your face, as the skin there is sensitive to chemicals.

There are a very few natural hair dye brands available, and the one that has had the best reviews is Aubrey Organics, Color Me Natural, Mahogany. This product was not well reviewed on Amazon but in several other places the customers found Color Me Natural to be a lot more effective than other natural hair coloring brands.

Another option is henna, which has some limitations and may or may not work for you. I like the Light Mountain Henna which I have used myself as it is not irritating and available in many color shades.

Another option is to try making your own homemade hair dye. We have several articles on this here at our site with simple, natural home recipes that are safe.

Looking for Hypoallergenic Hair Spray

What problems do you face in taking care of your skin? Since my wife is allergic to almost all odors, I'm looking for a hair spray that is hypoallergenic. There may not be such a product.

My reply:

Hi, thank you for writing. Yes, it is very difficult to find good hypoallergenic hair products, especially those with no added fragrance. I really empathize! One of the problems I've found with fragrance free products is that many still contain irritating chemicals like parabens or more intense preservatives, so even though you don't get a scent, you might be taking in more irritants than your skin can handle.

Many of the safer products that are available may contain no added fragrance, but may have a mild scent from the ingredients themselves. I've found this with most of the the skin care and cosmetic products that I use.

Since many product lines are in transition right now, I've set up a small online store to share some of the current hypoallergenic hair spray and hypoallergenic hair gel products that I am finding. You can check the ingredients and perhaps call the merchants directly to see how much fragrance they may contain.

I hope this will be helpful for your wife!

Natural Dark Brown Hair Dye

My friend wants a dark brown dye for his hair (including his sideburns).
All the dyes he used before caused his skin to breakout.
Do you have a remedy or the recipe to make this dye, or where can he purchase one.
Thanks

Our Reply

Hi, we have a whole section on our site with homemade recipes for hair dye, and there are also a few natural hair dye products that we've found do not contain PPD which is the main irritant in hair dyes.

Some of the best reviewed of the natural hair dyes I've seen are the Color Me Natural Hair Dye.

There are many other natural hair dye products, and it is difficult to find ones that both work well and also do not contain the chemical irritants that will cause breakouts. The few I've found are here in the Natural Hair Color section of our private Amazon store. These contain hand-picked products that I have researched personally.

Home Remedy for Hair Dye Allergy

by Don

Sweet N Low mixed into your shampoo and or conditioner can help with itchy scalp caused by hair dye. I have heard it can actually be put in the dye mixture.
This is only supposed to help with the itch. It WILL NOT prevent an allergic reaction.
